Hector E. Valdes-Ortiz
Hector E. Valdes-Ortiz concentrates his practice on first party property insurance defense litigation matters. He is also experienced with commercial litigation, medical malpractice defense, and construction defect, and fire loss litigation. As a member of the firm’s property litigation defense team, Mr. Valdes-Ortiz represents homeowner’s insurance companies in litigation matters involving claims for property coverage.
Hector started his legal career in 2002 in Puerto Rico as a litigation attorney. He represented the Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions, having led several securities fraud investigations and prosecuted the revocation of several broker-dealers and registered representatives’ licenses for Puerto Rico Securities Code violations and obtaining significant restitution for their victims. He also successfully litigated a multimillion dollar subrogation suit on behalf of Travelers Insurance Company and Certain Underwriters at Lloyd’s of London arising from a fire loss at large hardware supply facility. He also defended government employees in political discrimination suits, defended medical malpractice claims for one of Puerto Rico’s largest hospitals, and defended premises and auto liability claims for AIG and Sears/Kmart.
Hector moved to Florida in 2012 and, after gaining admission to The Florida Bar, has represented insurers in property and healthcare matters. He also obtained one of the first modifications of the PROMESA automatic stay in Puerto Rico’s bankruptcy on behalf of a Puerto Rico insurer. He has also represented property owners in construction disputes, merchants in contract litigation, and commercial landlords in real estate litigation in state and Federal Courts.
Hector is admitted to practice in Florida and Puerto Rico’s state and Federal Courts, and in the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the First and Eleventh Circuits. He is also on FINRA’s Roster of Arbitrators. He enjoys spending his spare time at sea with his family.
